Manufacturer's Description

BR Standard Class 9F

- etched deflectors

- removable coal loads

The last of the British Railways Standard Class locomotives to be designed by Riddles was the 9F heavy freight loco.

Design work began in the summer of 1951, with the first locomotive entering traffic in January 1954.

It was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Britain, and successfully performed its intended duties.

At various times during the 1950s, the 9Fs worked passenger trains with great success, demonstrating the versatility of the design.

92220 'Evening Star' was the very last steam locomotive to be built for British Railways emerging from Swindon on 18th March 1960.

In keeping with Swindon tradition, it was painted in lined green livery, complete with the copper capped chimney for which Swindon

locomotives were recognized the world over. The other 250 locomotives were painted in plain black.

Withdrawals began in 1964, with the final locomotives removed from service in 1968.
